I mean, I'm also an ICU doctor and our ICUs are filled with COVID patients on ventilators, most of whom so sadly will not survive.
And we're so busy running around just spinning those dials on the ventilators and trying to keep up with the workload that we're not having the time to talk to people, preferably before they get intubated, about preferences and values.
I'm doing some work with these people from the Army who are trying to start a tele-ICU sort of
scrambled force of volunteer ICU doctors who can kind of go into North Dakota or Minnesota or whatever hospital might be really that may not even have an ICU or ICU specialists around or may just be overwhelmed and overburdened just to have extra support to help the hospitalists through managing these people on ventilators or whatever.
And I said,
you know, there's got to be a piece of this that includes some assurance that there's been some even small attempt at having a preferences and values conversation with people.
It doesn't take that long.
I mean, this is primary palliative care in the ICU, and this is really important.
But yes, it all speaks to
Advanced care planning in general.
And the thing that I've learned from this film, we always talk about advanced care planning as relates to do you want to be intubated?
