She was very cavalier about her illness.

She would tell me, oh, yeah, now I'm going to go do, you know, gamma knife and I'm going to try this.

Or, yeah, we're going to try some radiation therapy.

This was unfolding over several months, and she was getting more and more intensive treatment.

I'd go visit her in the hospital.

She had this sort of optimism that so many patients have, this sort of sense of, well, yeah, the doctor said there's something else to try.

And you're their friend.

You're not the doctor in this case, and you're listening to what's happening.

bells and alarms are going off.

And what do you do?

Because they've got this other doctor, Dr. Wonderful, at that tertiary hospital that always has someone, we're going to try this next and we're going to try that next.

So what do you do?

So I remember there were times I sort of hinted to Bambi, like, you think this next intervention that you're going to try is really, what do you think is going to come of it?

And there was really nothing.

What could you say?

What if that doesn't work?

We were starting to have these little conversations.

Oh, but I'm not ready for palliative care yet.

And I'm like, Bambi, but palliative care is not about dying.
