I think that I was writing a play set in the village that I knew in Wiltshire at the time.
And I think thank God wasn't trying to take on the subject of the whole of England.
Rooster doesn't really have much to say on the subject for a start.
There's a few characters in it who have attitudes that you could describe as parochial, but the reason for that was dramatic.
It wasn't politically based.
I'll explain what I mean.
There's a character in it who says that if he leaves Wiltshire, his ears pop.
He doesn't like to go north of Wotton Basset or something.
Right, very happy then.
And he doesn't want to go anywhere.
And the reason for that, the whole reason for that, is that there's a character called Lee who's leaving that day to go to Australia.
And so I needed somebody that wanted to go and somebody that wanted to stay.
And the reason I needed someone that wanted to go and somebody that wants to stay is that Rooster is being asked to go and wants to stay.
Right.
And so the characters around him can either just be hanging out in the glade listening to what he's got to say, or they can be arranged in formal juxtaposition like a subplot around him.
