And it was once I realised that, like, the May Queen wants to stay, the May Queen, but she's got to go.

Rooster's got to go.

You need characters who are doing the opposite.

And so that was the main reason for that.

And then suddenly somebody's saying things like...

You know, I'd never seen the point in other countries.

I mean that I wait forever until I feel possessed by...

the the play before I start on it I've waited I think I had the the the first ideas for Jerusalem in 1994 I started talking about them in 2000 I started trying to do it in 2003 and 4 and I finally wrote it in 2009 so that that's a 15 year period of gestation and that's quite quick for me

I've got an idea for a play that I'm going to attempt later on this year because I feel it coming.

Amazing.

That I've had since 1993.

I try not to write them until they and the ones that like don't stay with you just fall away.

And the ones that do just continue to haunt you.

You just keep shutting the door on them until they break it down.

It does put you in a state that is, I think, a bit of an altered state.

For example, if you say, come back next week with a play, I wouldn't be able to do it.

I have to, because of the type of thing I write, I have to wait until I've got myself beyond myself.

I've got out of my own way.

And the thing, you become more like a flute rather than a flute player.

And I think, yeah, that's exactly right.
