The Orney Islands are north of Scotland at the fifty ninth parallel.
So it's very cold, very windy, and very wild.
And you're from there?
Yeah, I grew up there.
My mother is from Orkney and my father actually comes from an island even further north.
There are certain characteristics of what we call an isolated population that help us to find genes.
The main characteristic which helps us is the fact that there have been so few people there over time.
If you have a very large population, like a big city like London, you've got many, many different types of genes floating around in the population, and it makes it very hard.
You're basically looking for a needle in a haystack.
Stack.
But in a place like Orkney, because there are fewer people and there have been fewer people in the past, it's just simpler genetically.
There are less different types of genes floating around, so each one I'm looking for is easier to find.
Some of the most interesting things for me personally are how we can understand things about the past from looking at our DNA, not just our future.
The first thing I ever did, we took samples from people in Orkney and we were
were able to demonstrate for the first time ever that the blood of the Vikings was running in the veins of people today in the British Isles because they carried a type which was hardly seen anywhere else.
It was found in Norway, it was found in Iceland, but it was incredibly rare in England and in other parts of Scotland.
