And it's since been proven rather well that this is a Viking type.
The first man I found it in was my own uncle.
Yeah, the Fander effect's an interesting thing because it's a double-edged sword.
Because yes, you could be studying something that's so specific to your population that perhaps it's not applicable across the world.
However, Orkney isn't as isolated as some of the populations like the Quebec, because there's been a reasonably constant influx of Scots, and we can look at surnames.
In fact, in Australia, there are of course a lot of Orcadian surnames.
Names because of a later diaspora, but in Orkney you get two kinds: the very old ones like Flett, Fubister, Linklitter, Isebister, which show that these people have ancestry in Orkney going all the way back.
And we contrast those with names like Spence, Sutherland, Sinclair, names that you find in Scotland and other the sign of Scottish people moving in.
So it's not a hardcore isolate.
We've measured a lot of different things.
And when you start to see that in one population and in another and in another, it's showing us that this gene, this bit of DNA is somehow influencing this measurement.
And that's really giving a key biological insight because it's showing that this gene is in the pathway that controls blood pressure, which might not have been known.
And that's the reason that we do it.
Now you've looked at sleep as one of the things.
Yeah, we measure a lot of different things, and we have in collaboration.
With a professor in Munich in Germany, looked at sleep, where we found a variant in a gene called ABCC9.
And if you carry this variant, it means that you tend to sleep for half an hour longer per night than your friend who doesn't carry it.
Any idea what that gene does?
This gene is involved in sensing the levels of energy in the cells.
So there are these genes called clock genes that have been found in flavors.
