She was a Lithuanian refugee.
And she came from Lithuania when she was about 10 years old, when Russia invaded Lithuania in the middle of the night, they were bombed out of their home.
She spent two years on the run.
and ended up in a DP camp in Germany and finally came to America to Ellis Island, came to Chicago to the Lithuanian community.
She came, she was about 13 or 14 years old, early 50s when she finally got over here.
She went to University of Illinois.
My mother was homecoming queen at University of Illinois, met my father, they got married.
And my father was an entrepreneur as well.
My father was a book salesman and then he became a plastic molder.
And we went through a couple of bankruptcies back when I was a kid.
We came out of that back in 76 was my dad's last bankruptcy.
My dad said, I'm never going to have debt again.
He had more success.
My mother said, I'm going to start bringing kids from Lithuania that have bone disorders.
I don't know how she chose bone disorders.
and bring them to Chicago and help them and repair these bone disorders.
So she would go find kids that were specifically scoliosis or the spine was grown, you know, like an S or total bone issues.
And she had a relationship with Shriners Hospital in Chicago.
And she would bring one of the parents and the child to Chicago.
So they'd be two months, six months, eight months.
