Then it failed for unknown reasons.

That wasn't an impressive amount of time to transmit, perhaps.
But nonetheless
A barrier had been broken.
The direct exploration of the Martian surface.
Had begun.
Far above the Soviet Mars two and three spaceships.
Fared better than their landing probes.
Both ships successfully entered orbit.
And one of them would go on to circle Mars.
Three hundred and sixty two times.
Together.
Mars two and three sent sixty images of Mars back to Soviet scientists.
They also returned data about Martian gravity.
