Attributed to cost cutting in their manufacture.
To save money, the Soviet space program had used aluminium instead of gold.
In the ship's transistors.
This didn't survive the spaceflight.
As well as gold would have done.
Still?
One of the spacecraft, Mars six, had partial success.
It reached the planet and sent a probe down to the surface.
In March nineteen seventy four.
A landing probe transmitted 224 seconds of data before losing contact.
Possibly when it hit the planet.
Sadly, flaws in the system meant much of the data.
Couldn't be read.
The next year though saw more progress in Mars landings.
