And Constance, who is very much a people pleaser, wants to please him too, which doesn't please Mary Cat at all.
And so there's this very uncomfortable dynamic because Constance sees the possibility of leaving the house.
Because Charles's arrival has made that possible.
Mary Cat doesn't want her to leave.
She doesn't want Charles to stay.
And they are being constantly watched and othered by the outside world.
And so there's a lot about otherness and family dynamics and gender dynamics as well.
It's so beautifully orchestrated.
But yes, the arrival of this disruptive man, this awful man who is there basically to take money and objects and artefacts from this once wealthy house is just the catalyst for dreadful things.
Yes, she has her imaginary world, but she has another one outside of it where they can project and where they can be completely alone and where sounds and sights can be completely under their control.
But yes, it is also very funny in a dark way because Uncle Julian's dementia...
And his inability to understand that their very occasional visitors are hugely embarrassed when he mentions the murder.
But he does a little monologue about the sugar bowl.
And the sugar, of course, was where the arsenic was put that poisoned the family.
And he says, well, you know, you'll notice that we're using the sugar bowl.
You'll be thinking, has it been thoroughly washed?
That is a wonderful moment of darkness, but dark hilarity.
I found it very interesting, looking at these 14 different narrators...
to circle the truth, which, of course, is never really wholly apparent, because all you can see is through the perception of the different narrators.
