So was Akhenaten a heretic?

Was he a saintly, good, loving person?

Was he strangely womanish?

And was he a traitor to his people?

It's entirely to do with the speaker every time.

And Mary Amun, the narrator, is trying very hard to

to get to the truth of this, but the idea that the truth is a kind of black hole being circled by all these different voices.

I mean, there is no real tension in the sense that there's going to be no revelation at the end, but I think the revelation is in each speaker.

Yes, I think there are definitely themes.

I think one of the things that I found really interesting about reading these books together was how some of these themes overlap.

And one of them is the otherness of Akhenaten, who is just different to everybody.

He looks different.

When you look at his portraits, historically, he looks different.

thoroughly different to the way other kings and members of his family have been portrayed.

He has this slightly feminine cast to his face.

They're constantly asking themselves whether he's a man or a woman or maybe some part of both and so he's viewed as not being quite the same as everybody else which is very much what the Blackwood sisters encounter with their community.

The idea that the other is potentially dangerous but also potentially bringing something fundamentally different and transformative.

I think it's marvellous.

Again, it's another codependent relationship and it's absolutely fascinating because, as you said, there is this monolithic mother who is admirable in so many ways except as a mother.

And then there is this remarkable child who grows up in her shadow, does something that effectively overshadows her and then...
