My first school was in a village outside Canterbury, a very lovely place where creativity was also encouraged.
Do you have a favorite teacher from that first school?
Mrs. Marsden, who encouraged also my performing.
She cast me as a scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz, which is the lead boy role.
And I was determined to get that role.
And I was in the same year as Samuel Kelleher.
And I think he was like the cowardly lion, which, as you know, is too down on the credits.
And so that was a small win.
I loved it.
I loved performing.
And shortly after I moved to secondary school, Mrs. Marsden died.
She swerved, I think, to avoid a pheasant or something in the street and died in a car crash.
I was very upset by that.
Yeah.
She was like a second mother.
And this is aged 11?
Aged 11, secondary school, hated it.
Straight away?
Yes.
Immediately felt very different to everyone else in my class.
