You build up that ability, I think, over time.
I need to understand what the line is first, and then the players will definitely follow.
Again, I've been in instructional leagues.
I've been in charge of minor league systems.
I've been managing.
I've been a lot of different things.
I think as you work with the player and get to know the player better,
that they โ you know, I know what the line is, and I think that they figure it out also.
And then furthermore, as a major league manager, the office itself represents something.
So I think we all know how far we can go regarding the relationship and how casual it can be, but we do have a lot of fun.
Well, it's happened.
A couple years ago, I'll tell you, in 2008, we were playing in โ
Kansas City, and we were playing pretty well, and this was the year we went to the World Series.
We won a game in Kansas City but played poorly and did some things that I really did not like.
So I kind of blew up with the whole group, and I did some screaming in the locker room in Kansas City.
And also I really thought two things regarding that were perfect.
The fact that the meeting would be on the road in a visiting clubhouse where we hardly ever go there, so you leave it behind.
And the other thing is after a win.
I mean, it's so easy to pile on after a loss.
