and ask what problem you're actually trying to solve with said popping.
Because if you want to do real UX work, you can't just understand users.
You have to understand the people in the room with you, the internal users, the business users, the team around you.
The developers you work with, the marketing folks down the hall, the salespeople who are on the hook for bigger numbers.
Let me give you a few tools that I've found helpful over the years.

But don't react.
When someone pushes back on something, ask yourself, what's behind this?
Is this really about the work in front of us right now?
Is it really about the design?
Is it really about the research?
Or is it really about control or ego or fear, which usually drives ego and control issues?
You also want to learn to validate without agreeing.
Okay.
You can say, I can see why that would feel frustrating without conceding the point.
And the reason that works is because people want to feel heard more than they want to be right, believe me.
Whenever possible, you want to redirect to goals.
When a conversation gets emotional or gets abstract or it wanders, you know, from the point.
Bring it back.
To the user, the customer, the business objective, the outcome, whatever it is, anchor it somehow and keep coming back there, no matter how far that person drifts during the conversation.
