There is no film that is just quote-unquote telling the story as it is.
That's just not possible.
I think they handle those topics really well as kind of a baseline into the book.
They do great work with... The chapter on Mary Magdalene is really, really good and very, very helpful in the ways... troubling the ways that that character is typically sexualized or portrayed as a former reformed prostitute.
All these things that are just smuggled in from tradition.
Um, they do a really nice job handling, um, the, you know, the portrayals of the Pharisees and also the different ways that Jesus is positioned either against the Pharisees or against kind of Judaism more broadly.
There's a great discussion of how the chosen works on that theme that I thought was very, very perceptive and carefully rendered.

And one of my absolute favorite chapters is where they tackle the concept of two horizons.
This is, in my opinion, almost worth the price of the book alone is this chapter where they talk about each movie product or each TV show, in the case of The Chosen, has a horizon of the time in which it's made, but also the horizon of the story that it's presenting.
This is true of any adapted story.
But they handle it, I think, really, really thoughtfully here, and it was actually helpful for me.
It was a concept I have not really wrestled with before reading this book.
But, like, for example, the story of The Passion of the Christ, they have this really interesting kind of wrestling or analysis of The Passion of the Christ coming out in the 2000s, in which very violent movies were actually very popular, weirdly popular at the time.
And so there's this horizon of kind of movie violence that the movie exists within that has to be kind of considered when you analyze the story itself.
But then there's also the original horizon of the gospel it's trying to tell.
And it's ultimately dishonest not to acknowledge if you're a creator or someone who is critiquing creative work.
