Again, how do we do interpretation?
It's not just about measuring here are the good Jesus films and the bad Jesus films.
It's more about just analyzing the interpretive moves that are made across the board, even including when we read and including when the Gnostic Gospels made interpretive decisions and then including modern day presentations like The Chosen or The Passion of the Christ or The Jesus Story, all of these films that are pretty well known.
uh so so that's what the greatest story ever retold is about i'll repeat my earlier comment that this is a book about hermeneutics and about interpretation smuggled in the package of a book being about movies um which i think is kind of kind of clever okay what the book does well
I commented on a few things that I like already.
I just really like the approach broadly.
I like that.
It's about self-consciously about interpretation.
I think they handle the question of faithfulness extremely well.
They really try to cut through the impulse to identify a movie as being more or less faithful to the gospel and simply say, all these movies are making decisions, you know, and some decisions are more defensible.
Some decisions are less defensible, but it's not about just kind of statically identifying which movies are more faithful or not.
Um,
They also make great points that, like, even the movies that try to position themselves as merely just telling the story, even the verbatim, like, there's one that's, like, I think it's the Gospel of John, it's verbatim, just the whole script is just the Gospel of John itself.
But even in the act of making a visual presentation of the Gospel of John, you have to make interpretive decisions.
