But the difference was the Chinese, their culture didn't own horses and didn't know how to use firearms.
And so in the mining country, they had no way to flee, no way to fight, and they were sitting ducks.

We don't really know if there's any racial motivation.
That would be speculation.
What we do know is what I said.
They were extremely hardworking.
The typical Chinese miners would wait till the Anglos had abandoned a claim.
Then they'd come in a large company of anywhere from 10 to 30 miners, and they'd work the tailings, and they'd find the gold that the Anglos had missed.
And in the early years of the gold rush, they were highly praised by the Anglo newspaper writers.
These are hardworking people.
They're honest.
They don't commit crimes.
And so when they began to become targeted by the Joaquin gang, it created a lot of horror and uproar.
The raids on the Chinese mining camps are all very similar.
The gang of anywhere from six to ten outlaws would gallop into the camp.
They'd hold everybody up.
Anybody who ran would be shot dead or stabbed to death.
They'd loot the whole camp.
