The first was on the night of the fourth, fifth of may nineteen forty two, when they were mistaken for an enemy aircraft by the REF and shot down in error by a hurricane.
Thankfully, all the crew bailed out successfully.
The second occasion was by a German night fighter over Holland on the 20th-21 June 1942.
Although three of the eight crew members were killed, the youngest casualty was only 19, Alan managed to bail out with four colleagues.
After a brief period in hiding, being helped by Dutch farmers, Alan was captured on a tram while making his way to Amsterdam to meet up with Dutch resistance.
He was eventually taken to a new PAW camp in Silesia.
Called Stalagluft III, which became famous for the wooden horse escape and the great escape.
Having been forced marched into Berlin in early 1945, Alan was eventually liberated by the Russian army and returned home in May 1945.
He sadly died on his fifty-sixth birthday in 1976.
