What we see from the European Union is

Okay, I'll give you that one.

But I think the context here, what we see in reality, of course, is constant non-compliance by the Irish state with regulations.

And it's almost like we behave at a state level like naughty school children.

And we're demanding or we will only comply with regulations that are for our own good.

if we're forced to do so by the European Union.

And of course, it's a great outmat for our politicians because they can say to the lobbyists, oh, sure, we wouldn't do this at all.

It's the fellas in Europe are making us do it.

Isn't it a shock that we in Ireland, in order to do basic things like protecting our own biodiversity, our own birds, our own bogs, our own habitats, our own marine areas,

We have to be forced by foreigners in the European Union to basically do the right thing.

I think it speaks very, very poorly of a political mindset in this country where we regard protection of our own critical natural assets as nobody's business at all.

And I think it really is a shock and a shame.

And I think it is probably also worth pointing out that in terms of species, of course, the big pressure, climate change is clearly a big pressure in the marine systems, but

A bigger pressure, Matt, of course, is overfishing.

So the European Union set what they call scientific quotas.

Now, these are basically set, as the name suggests, by the scientific community where they assess what is the maximum take that a particular area can do without diminishing and without running down the stocks.

So Ireland and Spain, Spain number one and Ireland number two, have been consistently, over the last 20 years, the worst offenders in exceeding our legal quotas.

So Irish ministers do the usual thing of going to Brussels and saying, oh, don't mind those scientific quotas.
