And I think the idea that there are these crystal clear, you know, it's like you almost have a barcode that says what generation you are.

So the gap, the crucial thing between them is the age gap.

You know, that could slide up or down a decade or two either way.
No there are but actually I'm really struck by it the other way around too, more the other way around because you know as a kid, I was in my 20s or my dad died when I was 21 but you know a generation and basically your parents wore different clothes, listened to different music, had different attitudes to sexuality, politics, you name it and that's not true now you know.

And so I think lots of those markers are blurry, which in a way is why there's more emphasis on the narcissism of minor differences, I think.
I mean, there are kind of particular, there are kind of a couple of flashpoint things, but in general, I think that those generational things are much less marked than they used to be.

is is wildly different question um because i think the economic settlement between the generations is incredibly unfair yeah it's so unfair that it's actually like having a different version of the social contract i think people in their people in their 20s are set to pay more than twice as much into the state as people my age and return to less that they get back and um and there's a profound inequities around that and around
We've certainly done well to be talking for half an hour in the UK, contemporary UK, without bringing up house prices, but there it is.
Yeah, and there are particular inequalities around housing, you know, everything that cascades from that.
So I think the sort of lifestyle thing we talk too much about and the basic economic settlement too little.

I mean, I notice there's a thing in writing that, I mean, it's strange for writers starting out now, that it's both harder and easier.
It's harder to make a living for sure.
