And at the same time, there's a whole set of tools that people can have to attract attention to their work, to promote, to self-promote, to market, to make a noise.
I mean, there's an infinite range of things that people can do now that simply didn't exist.
But that skews it towards a particular kind of person.
Lots of writers very specifically are not that kind of person.
So I think that she's someone who's, you know, she's hungry.
She's got an edge.
She's got an appetite.
That's her advantage.
She's no silver spoon.
Yeah.
But, you know, I do notice there's a thing about, you know, the shy... We said before that the standard personality type for a writer is a shy megalomaniac.
And it's not necessarily easier to be a shy megalomaniac now.
That's really interesting.
I remember Martin Amis giving a talk when I was at university, so this would be about 1985, and saying to the audience of mainly students, is it true that people go to job fairs and apply for jobs and things like that in their last year and everyone was agreeing?
He said, well, that's another thing to add to the Thatcher rap sheet.
Because nobody ever thought about that at all.
And I think that's a sort of gradual sliding thing.
Because I noticed that people at university now, they talk a lot more and think a lot more about what they're going to be.
Was that the case when you were a student?
And I think it's downstream of fees as well.
