And I did want to keep as engaged with the world as I possibly could for as long as possible, just because it would kind of keep the windows open, keep literally looking out the window.
And for the kind of books I like to write, that was important.
I mean, having said that, the greatest novel ever written is written by someone who literally never went out of his room, and that's the whole point.

But I do deliberately do that thing of writing things that keep me thinking about things that are happening in the world.
At various points I had column in the papers back in the deep historic past of about 10 years ago.
You could help support yourself doing journalism as a writer.
Columns are by far the most effective economic way of doing it because they're better paid.
But I find they do sort of slightly spin them out of my own entrails.
And so almost exclusively for the LRB, I write longer things that involve quite a lot of research.
doesn't directly feed into the fiction, I don't think, but it does feed into a sense of keeping connected with the world and staying interested and staying curious.
I mean, it's definitely been helpful, I think, helpful to my head, if not necessarily to the books, but I hope it's helpful to the books too.
