But back then, at night, with very limited aiming capabilities, that was the way that war was waged.
And we shouldn't balk from that.
We can talk about it, but we were doing the same
to the industrial heartlands of Germany later on in Hamburg and places like that.
We were doing the same.
And so March 1941, I think 1,000 people died over the course of 24, 36 hours bombing.
That's 1,000 people dying.
And then over the rest of the war, I think Scotland was attacked about 500 times more.
And so the death toll from the blitz
through the whole of the wartime period.
For Scotland, it was 2,500 people killed and 8,000 people injured, tens of thousands made homeless.
And you just don't hear about it.
But there are some astonishing pictures from Glasgow of people walking through the rubble with prams, with trolleys, carrying their possessions, trying to get to safety.
And we just don't really hear about those sort of incidents when we talk about the Blitz.
as a wartime experience.
And again, can you imagine a blitz now?
Can you imagine the trauma and the terror and the reality of 10,000, 20,000, 30,000 people being bombed out of their home, a thousand people being killed in one industrial town in one night?
And then take yourself to Glasgow or to Liverpool or to Aberdeen or any of those big industrial towns, Manchester.
Can you imagine the next morning what you'd be doing with your family?
Where would you go?
