Um and and that's really what happened in November of twenty twenty.
People started to switch from long gold for protective defensive reasons to the recovery that was coming from COVID.
So gold is a good hedge against inflation, but it's more monetary inflation than it is consumer price in uh CPI.
uh inflation.
So so that's the first thing I'd say.
It's also those relationships again are very much a Western investment phenomenon.
And with Western investment a smaller component of the market over the last few years uh than it normally would have been, that's one of the reasons gold has held up as inflation has come lower.
Now, Western investors, why have they not been buying gold?
Well, I guess it depends.
If you look at the United States, they've had a very good performing stock market.
You haven't really had to worry about gold.
You've just had to worry about which of the tech stocks that you you own and and m and g and getting your allocations right there.
Uh and the other thing is as well, are money market funds uh a huge competition for gold?
Because when they're paying five percent, that's a big opportunity cost.
If you're putting your money in something which isn't delivering an interest rate or a dividend coupon, then
You know, that's a big barrier for gold to get over.
You have to be really positive about the returns for gold, you know, to to forego that five percent interest rate.
So I think that's one of the reasons why Western investors haven't been buying gold, particularly in North America.
And then if you look at Europe, another really big historical gold buying area, their economy is mired in recession at the moment with high energy prices, high food prices and and
an and a cost of living squeeze, together also with high interest rates, proving that barrier towards investment.
