The next breakthrough probably already exists as an observation in a forgotten laboratory notebook, an unanswered question in a university, or an experiment inside a company that has not yet succeeded.
For 250 years, American pharmaceutical innovation has been the work of turning those uncertain beginnings into something extraordinary.
