An irresistible logic.
The North is never going to get over this conflict in any meaningful way.
unless and until both sides give equal respect to the rule of law, the people required by the state to enforce the rule of law, in other words, policing.
And we know, despite the best efforts of the police and intelligence,
others to increase the number of Catholics in the PSNI.
Those targets are still way off.
And certainly it's the current chief constable's view, and I think he's probably right, that what is partly inhibiting the recruitment of more Catholic officers is a failure by the state to be seen to be transparent and fundamentally truthful about some of the things that
did go wrong and, you know, were questionable.
And I mean, the same
The same problem attaches to the IRA or Sinn Fein's position on legacy because, I mean, they say truth is essential reconciliation, but like the British government, they don't give details and they're going to confine their response to what they describe as a corporate response, so without naming individuals and so on.
The more these two sides, protagonists, stall on truth or give partial truths, the less faith the wider public is likely to have in the police.
And truth is essential to reconciliation.
So to that extent, there's a logic there.
