I can focus on this thing because I just saw something that triggered a memory, and I want to write about that.

I don't have to have a melody.

I can write it to a meter that I've got in my mind.

And thematically, you have a new album called Grey on which there are a lot of landscapes and characters within those landscapes and lives changing.

To what extent are they autobiographical or are they sort of taking their cues from Bernie Taupin, who was always writing sort of vignettes about imagined characters?

Yeah, no, so this record for me is much more personal.

So after 35 years, I left California.

And so Goodbye California is just a fond farewell to a place where I had my kids, where my life was centered.

You know, American farmer is very much like something that Bernie would do.

I live in a farming community.

I'm watching what's happening to the kind of independent farmer, the family-owned farms when confronted with commercial agriculture and being outpriced by everything.

And in many cases, those people losing their farms and their way of life for generations.

I just found that at this stage of my life, when I'm not spending so much time looking forward and I have a little more time to kind of look back,

I actually feel I'm in a place where I've got some objectivity, where I can actually say something that might be valuable to somebody else about what I've kind of been through in my own life.

Well, it does sound like a very reflective and personal record.

And I read somewhere that you've been making this record for the last couple of years.

Yeah.

And in that period of time, of course, you've lost both of your parents.

Yeah.
