And I don't think I've ever cried like that since.

And...

Bernie and Elton had a song called Daniel.

Daniel, my brother.

I mean, I'm seven at the time, but it felt like they had written it for me.

And it was really kind of arguably the most traumatic moment in my life.

And I told him about that story and various others.

So he knows kind of what a huge fan I am and the huge impact that their music has had on me.

And what about lyrically?

Bernie Taupin is a previous guest on This Cultural Life.

He's talked about growing up here in Lincolnshire, but having the sense of Americana, being in love with the myths of the West and becoming a farmer, then writing those stories about, you know, the plains.

Yeah.

How much of an influence were his lyrics on the songs that you have more recently been on?

Well, what I was so fascinated by was that they didn't work together.

that Bernie would write the lyrics and fax them to Elton and well and when you take a look at Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Bernie's upstairs Elton and the band are recording downstairs they're recording whatever Bernie wrote last night they finish they have lunch Bernie comes down hands him the lyrics to the second song and Elton John he says okay and Bernie's written a sad song about a girl so we play it like this and that's just genius like that's unbelievable and

And especially to have the kind of incredible emotional pull that those songs have had for me over the years, I can't believe that they're made in two parts.

And that's the thing that fascinated me the most.

And so where it helped me musically was that I didn't have to organically come up with a melody and a lyric at the same time.

I could actually have something that I really want to say.
