Back to episode one now, about Charlotte Coles losing her life savings to a team of sophisticated con artists who are ganging up to scam her.

Twenty years earlier, in 2003, a 19-year-old Charlotte Coles is sitting on the campus of Columbia University, outside Lerner Hall.

She's a creative writing major, and as she opens a bag of potato chips and pops a couple into her mouth, the news of the day spreading all over campus is about a con artist named Christoph Rochencourt.

And at this point in Charlotte's life, she's a teenager.

And elaborate con stories like this are just something she sees on the news or in Hollywood movies like The Usual Suspects.

The idea that Charlotte Coles would one day fall hook, line, and sinker for an elaborate con herself and lose her entire life savings in one fell swoop is just so far removed from her realm of thinking at this point.

And that's the problem.
