The brutality there was unlike anything I had ever seen, but so was the beauty.

Look, you know, I had guns, multiple guns pulled on me, you know, within my first week there.

You know, I had, I saw...

You know, people that were left dead in the street.

I saw a level of desperation, of wildness, of unbelievable disparity between those that have and those that do not.

You know, people called it the wild, wild west.

But, I mean, it was run by criminals.

I mean, that's just what was going on there then.

Yeah, you know, living in this –

Tiny little place with four other people.

I slept on the floor.

We turned the lights on.

You know, the cockroaches would go everywhere.

You'd feel them climbing over you all at night.

The buildings had curfews, so you, you know, you could only get in and out at certain times.

And then if you needed to get out, you know, you'd throw the fire hose down and you'd rappel down out of the windows.

I mean, it was a wild place in a wild time, but the most alive, the most impactful time of my life, without a doubt.
