Football seems almost a side issue in a lot of clubs alongside their player trading and their demand to generate revenue.

Whereas international team, I think a manager really has a chance to put a stamp on the side.

So I think if you are somebody who has a status in the game already,

be that as a former player or as a coach has been successful, I can see why, sure, the money might not be quite as good in, in international management, but it's, uh,

It's a more fun job and it's a job where you can express your coaching ideas much more fully than you can do in the club game.

Well, I'm really interested to see how Xavi does with the Netherlands.

The Netherlands have had this basic circuit of three or four different coaches, Van Gaal, Koeman, Blind, Advocat, and they keep coming back to the same people.

So for them to break that cycle, for them to go for somebody totally different, I mean, they haven't had a foreign manager since 1978 with Ernst Happel, the Austrian coach.

But he'd keep coaching in the Netherlands.

He'd been very successful with Feyenoord.

To go for somebody completely removed from that world, I think is fascinating, particularly given...

Xavi seems to represent the core values of Dutch football much more than, say, Ronald Koeman does.

Xavi is of that Johan Cruyff school in a way that Koeman wasn't.

So in a sense, it's a return to traditional Dutch values, which I really haven't espoused at national level for probably 20 years or so, probably, I don't know, 2006 World Cup, years in 2004.

But I mean, from the time that Van Basten came in, they've been moving away from our total football model

So that return, I think, is fascinating, particularly given Xavi is somebody who I think is quite thin skinned.

I think he's somebody who often seems a bit sanctimonious in his post-match remarks.

He wants football played the right way.

And he's going to be walking into a room full of Dutch journalists who, as anybody who's ever been in a press conference with Dutch journalists knows, that's one of the most robust environments he's going to face.
