But the last three World Cups, France have won one,

come second in another and come fourth in another.

And yet there's a sense they've somehow slightly underachieved.

So there is a sense there is growth to be had there.

I think it's very hard to be critical of Deschamps because they were so regularly in the semi-finals and beyond in major tournaments.

But really, to only win one tournament does feel like underachievement.

And then I sort of...

I always felt Deschamps was slightly holding them back by being overly cautious.

And then he doesn't do that at the World Cup.

And what happens, they get completely overrun in midfield by Spain.

So you think, oh God, maybe that caution was justified.

But maybe the truth is that Deschamps was overcautious on occasion and maybe he could have withdrawn one of those four forwards, have an extra midfield against Spain.

But again, managing that, it'd be interesting to see how Zidane deals with it.

But they have so many options, so many positions.

You would think he'd be able to call two different schemas.

One for playing a team where you know you're going to dominate the ball and then you can go out and hammer them with your brilliant forward line.

Another for those more competitive games, such as against Spain, where maybe it's going to be more of a battle in midfield.

Yeah, absolutely.

I mean, their record in Euros is terrible.

I mean, it makes no sense, but it is really bad when you compare it to the players they've got available.
