When you read Portrait of the Artist, it is filled with this misogyny in which women, if they exist at all, as characters in the book, are just there as these ghoulish, erotic spectres who haunt him and he's paying for sex with.

I guess I just get wary when in order to try and rehabilitate very misogynistic male writers from history, there's an attempt to argue on the basis of often not a great deal that their works were sort of more collaborative than in fact they were.
As if
rehabilitating the work is the important thing to be doing rather than just identifying Joyce's a misogynist.

And I agree.
I feel when reading the biography of Joyce, I've been reading, Nora's kind of hilarious and tough.
And she sort of has the same attitude to his writing as we do.
And she's not even particularly interested in it.
