Portuguese explorer and conquistador Tristão da Cunha is both the namesake of Tristão da Cunha,
and the first person to site the island in 1506.
Ratting Day, yes, rats, is a tradition on the island that sees the community come together to battle, to eliminate, to reduce the number of invasive rats in the fields and stone walls, particularly in the potato patches area.
This is done to protect the local wildlife, bird life, and crops, as rats pose a serious threat to the island's delicate ecosystem.
It's both a practical conservation effort and a cherished social occasion, blending purpose with community spirit.
Thus, part environmental geography and part cultural geography.
