The Tristan da Cunha is a remote group of volcanic islands in the South Atlantic Ocean.
And we are talking remote here.

First, its political geography.
It is one of the three constituent parts of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha, with its own constitution.
The territory consists of the inhabited island Tristan da Cunha, which has a diameter of roughly 11 kilometers, or 6.8 miles, and an area of 98 square kilometers, or 38 square miles.

As of October 2018, the main island had 250 permanent inhabitants, pretty amazing for such a remote place, all of whom hold British overseas territory citizenship.
Why should we care?
Well, Tristan da Cunha is widely considered to be the most remote inhabited island in the world.
It is about 1,750 miles from South Africa and 2,088 miles from South America.
The main island is volcanic, with a central peak rising over 2,000 meters.
Part of its remoteness is because there's no airstrip on the island, so the only way of traveling to or from Tristan is by ship.
