Let's talk about land for a moment.

The lowest point of land on Earth is, you probably knew this, but it is indeed the Dead Sea on the border of Jordan and Israel.

The shores of the Dead Sea, located on the border of Jordan and Israel, exist at approximately 1,414 feet or 431 meters below sea level.

I've been there and it is truly a fascinating place.

This hypersaline lake sits in the Jordan Rift Valley, a geological depression created by the separation of the African and Arabian tectonic plates.

The Dead Sea is a landlocked saltwater lake known for its high mineral content, which makes it too salty for most life to survive.

Hence the name.

In fact, you can sit in the lake and read a book.

There is also a very low place in the USA that you've probably heard of, Death Valley, California.

Death Valley's Badwater Basin is the point of lowest elevation in North America at 282 feet or 86 meters below sea level.

Now let's talk about sea or ocean or lakes.

The Caspian Sea in Asia is actually below sea level.

It's really an inland lake, not a sea at all.

Its surface is about 27 meters below sea level, or minus 91 feet.

The lowest point in the oceans is the Challenger Deep, located in the western Pacific Ocean at the southern end of the Mariana Trench.

This point reaches approximately 35,814 feet, or 10,916 meters, below sea level and is the deepest known point on Earth.
