Detailed ongoing observations of ocean conditions are necessary to inform adaptation and resilience policies.
The ecological marine units, or EMUs, include six ocean variables, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nitrate, phosphate,
and silicate at each of 52 million locations in a 3D point mesh.
The attributes represent decadal averages from a 57-year climatology record.
These variables are displayed on a 3D map and as columns showing variables as they change from the ocean's surface to the floor at each location.
Do a search on Living Atlas Ecological Marine Units and start exploring the data.
It is truly amazing.
You get from the surface to the bottom of the ocean column at that location in millions of locations.
So, for example, if you zoom to the west of Italy, you can see that this is classified as EMU9.
Mesopelagic.
moderate to cool, euhelene, oxic, low nitrate, low phosphate, low silicate.
Think of the EMUs as ocean regions exhibiting physically and chemically distinct water volumes.
The vertical distribution of EMUs in the water column were placed into depth zones representing epipelagic, 0 to 200 meters deep, mesopelagic, 200 to 1,000 meters deep,
bathy pelagic, 1,000 to 4,000 meters, and abysso pelagic, over 4,000 meters, layers.
When you look at the map of the global EMUs, or ecological marine units, you will gain a deep sense that the world's oceans, like the land masses they envelop, are composed of distinctive regions.
Temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and other characteristics are impacted by land and its people.
Earth-sun relationships, weather and climate,
and impact the land and human lives upon that land.

You will see ocean currents at two scales, global represented by large arrows, and at a detailed scale represented by small animated arrows.
