The drivers on the steering wheel get a notification about blue flags.

It's a very advanced and technological system, but it is one that had a failure and a sort of a malfunction.

It went rogue, not

sentient AI or anything like that but just a system error basically that meant that drivers were being pinged for blue flags when they were nowhere near the leaders I think it was happening fairly early in the race I think it was about lap 8 or 9 people were starting to be pinged for them so that was going a bit

haywire so uh race control fa realized that they needed to turn the automatic system off it then went to manual it's just a case of the marshals uh blue flagging the drivers um when somebody was near and also the teams took on a bit more responsibility or supposed to take on a bit more responsibility in letting their drivers know

So for Sainz who was battling with Fernando Alonso at the time Piastri was right behind him and yeah without any warning on his steering wheel of the blue flags he didn't quite realize that Piastri was so close behind him so that was one I think he used the words good excuse and the other one was that he couldn't see Piastri in his cockpit.

which is something that the stewards accepted as a fairly reasonable explanation.

That's why they only gave him a five-second penalty instead of a ten-second penalty.

Sainz said he hadn't spoken to Piastri, but hoped that Piastri would understand those reasons.

I think it's fair to say Piastri, given what he said afterwards, was certainly not understanding that.

I think the words he used was, it's the dumbest thing he's ever heard.

And as Piastri said, that has come up before amongst some of the drivers as well.

I mean, it was a machine gun firing of social quotes, you call it, you know, like those quotes that Piastri said was, yeah, I'm sure fired across social media everywhere.

He was, yeah, livid because I think he really feels like he was robbed of a chance of an unlikely victory there.

So you can understand the frustration.

I mean, what did you two think of it?

Did you think that signs as excuses stack up or do you think that it was unacceptable?

It's almost similar with, it's not as bad as, it's definitely worse than the Hamilton and Piastri impeding where you need to be looking in your mirrors as well as even if you're not getting the information from the team.
