I'll be honest, I think that was probably, you know, the hardest thing about it, that contrast, as I say, of complete, complete highs, you know, and it's as high as I've ever been, you know, as a footballer, but that then goes into your personal life, you know, you've achieved what you want to achieve.
you know family's happy because you've done that because you're happier you know people around you everyone around the club it's just in such a good place mentally and then again to receive that news where you're then looking forward you know so positively to what's going to be a new season a promotion and then
That just gets blown out of the water, really, with that news.
Yeah, it was something I would most certainly have not wanted to do, if I'm being honest.
I wanted to stay in my house.
I'm fortunate, again, I've got a good family support structure around me that has helped in the football side of things throughout my career.
And they certainly were there for me during this incredibly tough time.
A few of us decided to go over to the ground together.
On the Sunday, which was, again, up there for the most difficult things I've ever done, just going in the first place, it kind of brought a realisation to the situation that I didn't really want, if I'm being honest with you.
I felt if I sort of stayed away, you just don't want to believe it has happened.
That was probably my initial thoughts, having first heard the news.
before I went to the ground I just still I just couldn't process it I just I couldn't I didn't want to believe it so in my mind by being away from it it hadn't really happened as silly as that might sound but I think that helped just in terms of again just dealing with it I think it's very important to you know grieve you know and we certainly did and we still do but especially that initial period of you know
And that, as I say, acceptance that something so dreadful has happened, really.
And see the bits and bobs on top of that.
I just have always had in my head as difficult as it is and something we've tried to use to help us through it is what Justin would have done, how he would have dealt with it, especially the senior lads.
But some of the other boys, you know, it's about us really trying to step up and almost compensate for that loss, really, as much as we can and try not to let it affect us in a negative way.
way because I know for a fact Justin would not have wanted that you know and speaking to his family and um you know who have been amazing you know I can't have enough words in terms of how they've even dealt with it you know the way they have and you know in terms of the the first instance the first day we were all back in here I got a message from Charlie the day before Justin's son
just saying obviously I know you'll probably address the boys we want you to know from the family that we don't want this to affect the group negatively you know everyone has to try and move forward and that was such a powerful thing for me to be able to read to the lads because it's very easy for me to sit there and say that but it's me who don't get me wrong I've lost a manager and someone I would consider to be a friend and someone who would have gone on to be a good friend um
But it's not my dad, you know, it's not my uncle or my husband, you know.
So to come from Charlie and be able to say that in front of the group, I'd say was very powerful for me to be able to do that.
