So, you know, if you think of those three elements, the trigger, the behavior, the reward, let's take a simple example.
Stress triggers us to eat.
cupcakes or chocolate and then we feel better, that's the reward.
you know, that habit loop gets laid down.
Well, the same thing is true with technology.
If we're gett stressed out
And then we go and distract ourselves by surfing the internet on our phone or checking our Facebook feed or whatever, that temporary distraction gives that same type of temporary reward.
So that type of habit loop can get set up in the same way as eating or cigarettes or anything else.
Yes, yes.
And some of the technologies are even designed to maximize that type of hit.
Intermittent reinforcement basically means that you're getting rewarded intermittently.
There's not a regular schedule of reward.
So email or
Twitter or even texting is a great example of that.
So if we knew that we're gonna get an email every thirty seconds, then our brain is gonna start expecting that and it's it's not gonna get the big dopamine hit as if we get emails
at a random schedule or somewhat random so
If we don't know the next time we're gonna get a phone call or a text or an email, especially if we have all those alerts set up on our phone.
It basically jacks our dopamine system.
