The department chair cleans it once, nothing happens.

The department chair cleans it for a second time, still nothing happens.

And the department chair clings it the third time.

And at that moment, exactly the three people that have spinach in their teeth remove it.

Now, for most people that hear this for the first time, this sounds like magic.

How could it possibly be that exactly the three people that have the spinach in their teeth know to now to remove it?

And if you think it through a little bit and you start to realize that no one would other people know that you know that other people know and so forth, it is actually quite easy to figure out why this has occurred.

Let's start with the simplest level, which is, suppose that there was one person at the table that spinach in their teeth.

That person can see the other 11.

So at the moment that the department chair says at least one person has spinach in their teeth, that one person knows that it must be them because they can see that the other 11 don't have it and therefore they can infer that it must be them.

So with one person, clean the glass once is enough.

What about two people?

Well, if after the first clean, nobody removes the spinach,

And there are 10 people at the table that don't have spinach in their teeth.

And the two people that do have it, they can see that there are 10 people that don't have it.

But after the first cling, nobody does anything.

So that must mean that you can infer that the person that you, if you have spinach in your teeth, there's one other person that has spinach in their teeth and you see them.

But if they're not doing anything,

It must mean that there's at least one other person at the table who has spinach in their teeth.

Otherwise, they would have acted.
