Uh I'm Avis Renshaw.

I'm current president of Loudoun County Farm Bureau.

A comment was made at a recent public hearing indicating that Farm Bureau had an adversarial relationship with Loudoun Wineries.

Farm Bureau weighs in on rural Loudoun issues as they intersect with official Farm Bureau policy.

Our mandate is to advocate for farmers, support agricultural business development, and promote safe, fresh, locally grown food through lobbying, education, and resource programs.

As such, wineries are firmly within the Farm Bureau wheelhouse of advocacy.

What's not within the scope of our advocacy are rural businesses claiming agricultural exemptions for non-ag uses.

That would be a barn utilized as an event center, posing as an ag building, built only to ag building code standards.

Building codes are based on risk.

A barn holding hay with an occasional human or two poses much lower risk to life than a building frequently hosting 100 people who need to have appropriate egress.

An ag building has lower building standards and thus a lower cost to build.

Your staff has well defined how the business ag exemption was crafted and under what circumstances and procedures it was envisioned to be utilized.

Please respect the intent of the ag exemption.

Farm Bureau is on guard to protect legitimate agriculture exemptions for legitimate agricultural enterprises.

Legitimate farmers need those valid agricultural building code standards.

Farm Bureau respects the work that staff has done on this issue and encourages them to help rural loudoun businesses be in compliance with their appropriate building standards for a safer rural business experience.
