But then also you could see sometimes it's going from a two-bedroom apartment and you have a roommate to going to a one-bedroom apartment, which you can totally afford, to going to a deluxe two-bedroom apartment.
And you're like, wait, hold on.
I don't have a roommate anymore.
I can't afford two bedrooms.
One of the things that financial advisors and other experts I spoke to said in the pandemic, we were kind of treating ourselves as a way to cope.
Those of us who were lucky enough to be working from home and not sort of on the front lines of the pandemic.
And also in the great resignation of 2022, that summer when everybody was moving from one job to another or able to capitalize on these huge premiums that employers were offering when they needed workers.
people were making more money.
So when they first got that bonus or that salary jump, they were able to spend more money on certain things.
They were able to expand their budget a little bit more.
But now that we're dealing with lifestyle creep and inflation, that's not going as far as it used to.
responsibility is knowing the numbers so if you're able to look at your budget or understand how to budget and understand what you're paying for x what you're paying for y what you're paying for z then you're aware lifestyle creep is when all of that stuff starts happening and you're not aware you don't know the numbers you couldn't tell me how much you spend on that lunch out or you couldn't tell me how much you have allocated to travel or how much you have set aside for certain expenses
That's when things have gotten maybe a little bit beyond our scope.
That's when you sort of have to rein things in and understand what is this that I can control and what is this that I can't control.
Detangling what is inflation and what is lifestyle creep is really difficult.
And financial professionals totally acknowledge this.
What they recommend is something called the backwards budget.
That's an idea from a financial advisor named Charlotte Galecka.
The reason I like this idea is because it's what we were talking about earlier.
It forces you to confront the numbers.
