So you look at several months of expenses
and you total up the sum of housing, transportation, grocery costs, anything that is absolutely essential, things that you really can't get by without.
Once you have that sum, you can compare it to what you've spent in months past, or even how deep you want to go past.
And you can say, all right, this is pretty consistent, or okay, this went up because my landlord really increased my rent, or
This went up because I have to spend more on other medications.
Or this went up because I stopped taking the train and I started taking Ubers everywhere.
That's when you sort of see, okay, which of this is something I can control?
It's what we were talking about earlier.
And which can I not control?
Once you have that number, you know, the essentials number and how it's grown, you can work backwards.
You can look at what you're bringing in, where it goes, and how you're sort of managing the rest of your budget.
I spoke with a professor who studies conspicuous consumption, which is a huge part of lifestyle creep.
And he talked about how we've always had this as humans that we emulate people we admire.
They even say, dress like your boss, dress like the job you want.
You know, we're kind of encouraged to do this.
But social media has taken it to a total other level because these aren't even people we sometimes interact with in our daily lives, but we're already internalizing the stories that they're telling us about what it means to be successful.
When I'm sitting in my cubicle, I can look at the person next to me and think, okay, you know, we both make similar money.
We work at the same job.
We're both successful.
I feel good about this.
