And so if we can push ourselves a little bit beyond that and instead say, what we should actually be trying to build all of the time is self-efficacy.
And I continue to think that self-efficacy is just one of the most underloved concepts in all of psychology.
And you, of course, know this, but if anyone needed a quick definition, self-efficacy is basically your belief in your own capabilities.
That if an obstacle comes up, your level of confidence that you will overcome.
Figure out a way around it that you already have or could quickly acquire the resources to solve it.

So in the very first season of Ted Lasso, there's a great line where Rebecca says to Ted, do you believe in ghosts, Ted?
And he says, you know, I do.
But most of all, I just want them to believe in themselves.
And I think that's what self-efficacy is.
It's people believing in themselves, but also being surrounded by people who want them to believe in themselves.
And so if instead of saying, oh, I'm too lazy, I'm not disciplined enough, you can say, do I actually have the self-efficacy that I need?
And you can also increase your own self-efficacy just by thinking about it.
