Urban exploration is a huge thing.

Look it up on Instagram, on TikTok, on on YouTube.

Look up Urbex, which you probably know this, but it's a contraction of urban exploration.

And you're gonna find literally millions of videos.

But here's something that you may not know.

Urbex as a global movement really got kickstarted right here in Melbourne, in Australia.

There was a group here who put in the effort to formalizing it as a sport, and they called themselves the Cave Clan.

They formed in Melbourne in nineteen eighty six, the year I was born, and their specialty was drains.

They explored all of the stormwater drains throughout the city, but they also did abandoned buildings, bridges, and all sorts of man made structures.

And I've been a huge fan of the Cave Clan for years.

I've never actually formally joined, but I've been out with them a bunch of times.

The first documentary that I ever actually made was back at university back in 2006, because I went out and spent a day with the Cave Clan and I shot the whole thing on like VHS, and I think it's actually still on YouTube.

So I've known about the Cave Clan for a long time.

But I've always wanted to know how they got started.

I knew that they were very famous in the nineties, uh and then it seemed like lots of people were talking about them in the early two thousands, and then they kind of disappeared.

So I've always wondered what happened?

So to find out, I got in touch with one of the founders.

He goes by the name Duggo online, and he came over to my home studio to tell me his story.
