Do you get paid leave through work?
Once you've got that understanding, the next point is a really clear conversation with your partner of,
well, how long do I actually want to have off work?
I'm only going to get paid for three months, but I want to be home with my baby for 12.
So that's nine months that we could be in a cash flow deficit.
Well, the next step to that then is get really clear on what your expenses are.
If you know you're going to be in a deficit for nine months, you can work out exactly how much money you need in savings to completely cover that and not have financial stress during the time that you're off.
ultimately like when you bring kids into it it's all about choice and flexibility no one knows exactly what's going to happen some people decide to stay off work forever some people decide to go back sooner than they want but having more available sooner is going to put you in a better position
I would say as well the other side to it that I would absolutely want to get looked at is your insurances.
It's really easy for someone, a young couple, to be like, oh, it's fine.
If something happened to me, I'll work it out.
But the moment you bring a dependent into it, it's not so simple to say, oh, well, if I'm not here.
You know, get your life insurance, get your income protection and your total disability covers in place so that if you're ever, you know, sad enough to pass away or you get hit by an illness or injury, you and your kids are looked after because, you know, ultimately they're relying on you.
So really important one.
