It really comes down to your goals.
So when someone's maybe flexible on the goal or maybe they've got, you know, some short, some medium term, you know, you might take a balanced approach.
But if you're talking to a young person where their only goal is to have my own property in the next kind of one to three years time, you really don't want to risk putting it in.
You know, we've experienced so many big events in even my lifetime where
An emergency fund isn't dead money.
It's money put aside to give you flexibility and choice when everything else isn't going to plan.
There is no golden rule and that's why there isn't a set amount.
Is it three months?
Is it six?
Your emergency fund needs to match your lifestyle.
So if you're young, you live at home, you're on a really good income and your expenses are nothing, you could probably get away with a month or two.
And you're right, in that situation, your money would be better off working harder for you.
But if you're a sole trader on a variable income and it's inconsistent from week to week, or you're a single mom with three kids, then you really need to be considering holding the additional between three to six.
It's all about providing you that security when you don't have income coming through.
Great question.
And I've said it a few times today, all of these things need to link back to your broader financial goals.
Buying an investment property should align with your broad financial strategy.
It should complement what you're doing in the way of you should still be able to afford your lifestyle.
You should be able to continue to do what you're doing.
And in a really good world, you should also have surplus money that you can also put into another diversified asset.
