So I think just what we're seeing at Pet Refuge is really the tip of the iceberg of what's going on behind closed doors with abuse and pets being involved.

We've advocated across multiple parties for these kinds of things, just to bring the issue more into...

the public view, but also government view.

But I think they also have obviously formulated their own policy as well.

And I think hopefully they'll continue to broaden out what they're doing in this particular policy in the terms of wider animal welfare as well.

But that's a whole other topic.

Yeah, I think within the Family Violence Act, there are sections on coercive control from a psychological perspective.

So there is stuff that exists in that regard already, and this adds to it.

But hashtag not a lawyer, just to put it out there.

It's very much a real thing.

And I think if

New Zealanders knew just how real it was.

They would probably be pretty horrified.

We receive at Pet Refuge between five and ten calls a week for help through our referral partners such as Women's Refuge and Police, often within the police itself.

its referrals from homicide prevention, serious crime units, and part of that abuse is really this sadistic type of stuff that is done to animals as a means of coercive control.

90% of the pets that actually come into our care need veterinary treatment over and above your general health checks because of the abuse that they have suffered.

Yeah, we're talking about actual physical abuse of pets.

Some of it's really graphic.

Some of the things that we've witnessed or seen over the last sort of six to 12 months are

Intentionally breaking limbs of pets, burning, cutting, intentional deprivation of food, kicking, hitting them with objects that end up becoming lodged in their heads or body.
