So, yeah, there's a real sadistic level because I think...

Abusers know that that is a way to really strike at the heart of those people that they're trying to control because pets are family and people love their pets.

And so having a go at them is one way that abusers really gain that control or try to.

And is it a kind of straight line from abusing a pet to abusing a partner?

I think it goes hand in hand.

In our work, we see, obviously we work with clients that are referred to us and then we work with them to get their pets to safety.

And generally, it's everyone in the family is being abused in some way.

We're dealing with hospitals, we're dealing with police, victim support, women's refuge.

Often we'll go to pick up a pet to bring it to safety and there'll be visible physical injuries from the woman being

that we're picking the pet up from as well as the pet.

Yeah, and that kind of comes back to that whole pets are family thing.

Often the pet is a real source of comfort for those who are being abused, especially children.

And I think that's the bit that makes me sort of feel...

awful because the fact that someone knows that and is purposefully targeting the pet just shows the level of control and the level of hate that they have towards the person that they're supposed to love.

Yes, so that is always part of the equation.

We know from New Zealand research, but also international research, that 53% of women delay leaving out of fear for their family pets.

Around 23% of women have a family pet killed as part of family violence.

And so the threat to life for a pet is very real and women will stay to protect the pet.

So we're part of

the jigsaw puzzle really in terms of working with the other agencies, refuge, police, other family violence services and we come in and work with them and get the pets to safety so that everyone can leave together and they're not leaving their pet behind.
